The objective of this project was to assess and ensure compliance of the mine’s potable water supply with the SANS 241-1:2015 for drinking water quality. Routine monitoring had previously indicated that the potable water was unfit for human consumption, requiring a comprehensive evaluation and corrective action plan.
A focused compliance monitoring programme was implemented to assess water quality across various points within the mine’s distribution network. Analytical results were compared to SANS 241 limits to identify exceedances and potential contamination sources. Based on these findings, a series of practical recommendations were developed to address water quality deficiencies. The installation of reverse osmosis filtration units was identified as the most effective solution to improve overall water quality. Following installation, ongoing sampling and data verification were conducted to confirm the success of the treatment system and maintain compliance through continuous monitoring.
The implementation of the reverse osmosis system resulted in a significant improvement in potable water quality, with post-treatment results confirming compliance with SANS 241. The water is now fit for human consumption, providing a safe and reliable supply to mine personnel. This project not only achieved regulatory compliance but also delivered a sustainable solution to ensure long-term water quality management. The consistent monitoring approach and transparent reporting further enhanced stakeholder confidence and demonstrated the mine’s commitment to environmental and health standards.
